As mobile communication technology continued to evolve, from 2G to 3G (third - generation) and then to 4G (fourth - generation), the requirements for mobile phone antennas became more complex. 3G systems, which were introduced in the early 2000s, operated at multiple frequencies, including 850MHz, 900MHz, 1900MHz, and 2100MHz. To support these multiple frequencies, mobile phones needed antennas that could operate across a wide range of bands.
Manufacturers responded by developing multiband antennas. These antennas were designed to be able to tune in to different frequencies, allowing the phone to connect to different 3G networks around the world. For example, the Nokia 6630, released in 2004, was a 3G phone that could support global roaming. It had a multi - antenna system that included antennas for GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz bands and WCDMA (3G) antennas. This was a significant milestone as it demonstrated the ability of mobile phones to adapt to different network standards and frequencies.
The transition from 3G to 4G brought even more challenges for antenna design. 4G systems, such as LTE (Long - Term Evolution), required even higher data transfer rates and more efficient antenna systems. To meet these demands, multiple - input multiple - output (MIMO) technology was introduced. MIMO systems use multiple antennas at both the transmitter (base station) and the receiver (mobile phone) to increase the data throughput and improve the reliability of the wireless connection. In 4G mobile phones, MIMO antennas were arranged in arrays, with different antennas being used for different functions such as transmitting and receiving data simultaneously.
